Updates on Canadian Immigration Policies for International Students

International Students

Recently, the Immigration Minister extended three temporary policies that are of significant interest to international students in Canada. These policies reflect the Canadian government's ongoing support for international students during their educational journey in Canada and their transition into the Canadian workforce. Let's delve into these updates and understand how they may impact you or your loved ones pursuing studies in Canada.

Extended Work Hours for International Students

In a move that acknowledges the value of international students to the Canadian economy and society, IRCC has extended the waiver that permits students to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week. This extension is now valid until April 30, 2024. It applies to students who are already in Canada, as well as those who apply for a study permit by December 7, 2023. This measure offers students the flexibility to gain valuable work experience and support themselves financially while pursuing their studies.

Online Study Time Counts Towards Post-Graduation Work Permit

The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated a shift towards online learning for many institutions. Recognizing this, IRCC has extended the measure allowing time spent in online studies to count towards eligibility for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). This extension will benefit students who begin their programs before September 1, 2024. The PGWP is a crucial step for many international graduates seeking to gain Canadian work experience and potentially transition to permanent residency.

Additional Work Permit Extension for PGWP Holders

The Canadian Government has also extended the temporary policy that grants an extra 18-month work permit for PGWP holders with expiring permits. Those whose initial permit expires by December 31, 2023, now have the opportunity to apply for this extension. This additional time can be invaluable in securing longer-term employment and establishing oneself in the Canadian labor market.
