Embracing Diversity: Newfoundland and Labrador Facilitates Entry for Internationally-Trained Nurses

Internationally-Trained Nurses

Newfoundland and Labrador is making it easier for internationally-trained nurses to join the province's healthcare sector. With a recent amendment to the Registered Nurses Regulations, the province is opening its arms wider to internationally-trained nurses and creating more opportunities for them to lend their skills to the Canadian healthcare sector.

On June 2, 2023, Newfoundland and Labrador established a Designated Countries Pathway for nurses from seven countries, including the US, UK, India, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. This pathway is expected to facilitate the recruitment of nurses from these countries and ease their transition into the Canadian healthcare system. This development is particularly exciting for internationally-trained nurses as the Provincial Government plans to welcome approximately 200-300 nurses from India by the end of this year. This projection is in addition to the 200 internationally-educated nurses already contributing to the healthcare sector in the province.

The changes also aim at reducing costs and the time taken for education assessment for International Nursing Applicants. This streamlining process is a welcome development, making it more feasible for internationally-trained nurses to bring their skills and expertise to the province. With the global nursing shortage becoming increasingly apparent, Newfoundland and Labrador's step towards inclusivity is not just timely but also strategic. It broadens the pool of qualified healthcare professionals available to serve the local population. Internationally-trained nurses often bring diverse perspectives, cultural competence, and a wealth of experience that can significantly benefit the healthcare sector.
