Canada Extends Support to Sudanese Refugees with Fee Waivers and Expedited Processing

Canada has long been a welcoming haven for refugees from around the world. As the crisis in Sudan continues, the Canadian government has once again shown its commitment to helping those in need by implementing measures that support Sudanese refugees and their Canadian family members.

The Government of Canada recently announced that it would waive temporary residence application fees for foreign nationals who fled Sudan with their Canadian family members. This significant move underscores Canada's dedication to providing relief and aid to Sudanese people affected by the ongoing violence and unrest.

In addition to waiving the fees, eligible individuals can now apply for open work or study permits and permanent residence under the family class, all free of charge. To take advantage of these opportunities, applicants must arrive in Canada before July 15, 2023. The Canadian government recognizes the importance of providing financial assistance to families who have been forced to flee their homes, and these measures aim to alleviate some of the burdens faced by refugees during their resettlement process.

These new actions build upon existing support for Sudanese temporary residents already in Canada. The government has also committed to processing completed temporary and permanent residence applications from those living in Sudan on a priority basis. Furthermore, fees for passports and other travel documents for Canadians and permanent residents in the area will be waived. These measures help streamline the application process and ensure that those in need receive aid as quickly as possible.

The Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, highlighted Canada's dedication to ending the violence in Sudan and supporting the Sudanese people in their pursuit of peace. He emphasized that the government remains committed to helping the family members of Canadians forced to flee the violence find safety and unity in Canada. By extending this support, Canada demonstrates its solidarity with Sudanese refugees and its ongoing commitment to human rights and international peacekeeping efforts.

The new measures apply to immediate family members of Canadian citizens or Canadian permanent residents who meet the definition of a family member under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. Specifically, this refers to the spouse or common-law partner of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, a dependent child of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or of their spouse or common-law partner, and a dependent child of a dependent child.

To be eligible for the fee waivers and expedited processing, clients who were evacuated by Canada or its partners must provide proof of eligibility. Those who left Sudan independently must prove that they are an immediate family member of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and provide proof of their location in Sudan together prior to April 15, 2023.

While these new measures offer significant support to Sudanese refugees and their Canadian family members, it is crucial to remember that those applying to come to Canada will still be subject to all other legislative eligibility and admissibility requirements. These requirements help ensure that Canada continues to maintain its reputation as a secure and welcoming country for refugees while also prioritizing the safety and well-being of its citizens and residents.

In conclusion, Canada's recent announcement to waive temporary residence application fees and offer expedited processing for Sudanese refugees is a testament to the country's ongoing commitment to providing refuge and support to those in need. The measures put in place not only offer financial relief to refugees but also emphasize the importance of family unity during times of crisis. As the situation in Sudan continues to evolve, Canada's unwavering dedication to humanitarian efforts and the well-being of refugees is a beacon of hope for those seeking safety and a new beginning.
