Canada celebrated the World Refugee Day

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Melanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development, issued a statement to celebrate the World Refugee Day on June 20, 2022.

Ministers mentioned the plight and challenges faced by refugees, as well as the strength and contributions they bring to new communities. Refugees in Canada are an important element of society and the economy, with the country having a proud long-standing humanitarian record of being a world leader in resettlement and integration.

The ministers said that they are reaffirming their commitment to meet their refugee resettlement targets for 2022 and to resettling vulnerable Afghans in Canada. Despite the challenges they face in Afghanistan, they remain committed to welcoming at least 40,000 Afghan refugees to Canada.

Also, together with their international partners, they will ensure the safe passage of Afghan refugees to Canada and provide them with the assistance they need to start a new life in Canada.

Regardless of where, or at whatever time, people are forced to flee, refugees have the right to be protected and to be resettled in Canada.
