7,140 Afghan refugees were welcomed to Canada since August 2021

The government of Canada is currently working to increase the number of Afghans eligible for immigration under its commitment to welcome up to 40,000 refugees and vulnerable Afghans to Canada.


As of today, Canada has welcomed 7,140 Afghan refugees under all streams since August 2021. Under the special immigration program for Afghans who assisted the Afghan government in Afghanistan, the government received 14,740 applications from Afghan nationals.

9,815 applications have been approved so far, and 4,290 Afghans arrived in Canada under this program. In addition, Canada also accepted 2,850 Afghan refugees under the humanitarian program.


To be eligible for the immigration program for Afghans who assisted the government of Canada, you must meet all the requirements below:

  • you’re an Afghan national and your employment involved a significant and/or enduring relationship with the government of Canada, which could be, but is not limited to

    • interpreters who worked with the Canadian Armed Forces

    • local staff who currently or used to work at the Embassy of Canada to Afghanistan

  • you or your eligible family members were in Afghanistan on or after July 22, 2021 (the date this special program started)
